چکیده

Visual thinking tools empower people in solving complex problems by engaging them in the entire resolution process, suggesting appropriate actions with visual cues, and reducing their cognitive load by keeping a visual reification of the current task. At the same time, the visual interaction style provides an alternative to the current dialog-based model employed in most mixed-initiative (MI) systems. Visual-enabled MI systems avoid complex analyses of turntaking, and put users in control all the time. We discuss our implementation of visual "affordances" in such systems and present three examples used in COMIND, a visual MI system that we have developed. We show how humans can more effectively concentrate on synthesizing problems, selecting resolution paths that were unseen by the machine, and reformulating problems if solutions cannot be found or are unsatisfactory. We further discuss our evaluation of the techniques at the end of the paper.

Towards a Framework for Design and Evaluation of Mixed Initiative Systems: Considering Movement as a Modality

We propose a framework for design and evaluation of mixed initiative robotic systems, focusing mostly on the robot initiative in the case of a robotic shopping trolley. Throughout, we consider the implications of the movement modality in the robot initiative and the communication that follows it. We illustrate our considerations with our experience in designing and evaluating mixed-initiative h...

Evaluating Mixed-Initiative Systems: An Experimental Approach

Mixed-Initiative approaches to Planning and Scheduling are being applied in different real world domains. While several recent successful examples of such tools encourage a wider use of this solving paradigm, research in mixed-initiative interaction is still at an early stage and many important issues need to be addressed. In particular, most of the work has been dedicated to designing working ...

1 What is Initiative ?

This paper presents some alternate theories for explaining the term “initiative”, as it is used in the design of mixed-initiative AI systems. Although there is now active research in the area of mixed initiative interactive systems, there appears to be no true consensus in the field as to what the term “initiative” actually means. In describing different possible approaches to the modeling of i...

Evaluation of Mixed-Initiative Knowledge Base Development Methods and Tools

This paper presents a general framework for the empirical evaluation of mixed-initiative knowledge base development methods and tools. It also illustrates it with a knowledge acquisition experiment performed to validate a mixedinitiative method for acquiring problem solving rules directly from a subject matter expert. The main feature of this framework is that the evaluation is an integral part...

A Framework for Designing and Evaluating Mixed-Initiative Optimization Systems

Mixed-initiative approaches are being applied in combinatorial optimization systems such as planning and scheduling systems. Mixed-initiative optimization systems are based upon collaboration between the system and the user. Both agents possess unique and complementary abilities which can be jointly applied to intractable optimization problems. Yet current approaches to designing and evaluating...
